From Shadow and Act’s Tambay

November 30th, 2009

We haven’t exactly been too enthusiastic around here about all we’ve seen from Al Robbin’s second feature film, Grapes On A Vine, which has received some mentions on this blog, HERE and HERE; but, I have to give the man credit for all his efforts – specifically, he’s been relentless in marketing the film, sending out clips and trailers for us to look at and even critique, and he’s been very humble throughout, which has won my respect, regardless of how I feel about the footage I’ve seen of film thus far!

Al, who’s also a regular commenter on this blog, posted Facebook notifications alerting us to the fact that Grapes On A Vine is now available for screening via Amazon.com’s VOD streaming service, for a low rental fee of just $1.99 for 7 days, or you can buy it outright for $7.99. At those low prices, you really have little to lose in taking a chance and checking out a film that you may otherwise ignore.

I plan to rent it and watch it for myself, and you can as well, by clicking HERE to head over to the film’s Amazon VOD page.

In the 81-minute film… Kyle Hanson is the art director at the High Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. He wants two things in life, a male child and a van Gogh painting valued at 275,000. His wife Brandy cannot conceive, so he plans a camping trip where he will have her killed, making it look like a racially motivated killing, so that he can collect the 500,00 insurance policy which will enable him to get what he wants. Of course, things don’t go as planned.

So, check it out if you wish, and share your thoughts with Al afterward.

Now this is what I am talking about! I already love Hulu, so the thought of a Hulu-like web site that features nothing but independent black video is exciting. Check out this news from Aymar Jean Christian.

When new technologies emerge a host of new companies tend to sprout up. Tons of independent radio stations catering to diverse interests before 1970s-style deregulation. Digital technology brought dozens of new channels to television; that same technology fostered numerous production companies making independent TV and films. Now the drive to create original web video — a trend that dates back to the late 1990s, but has gained new steam with broadband and YouTube post-2006 — has attracted new voices previously unheard. We have corporately produced web series, but also black web series and series made with virtually no budget at all.

AFP reports that top film directors across the world rallied around Roman Polanksi, declaring themselves “astonished” at the arrest of the film-maker over a 1977 underage sex case.

Michael Mann, Wim Wenders and Pedro Almodovar were among more than 70 film industry figures who signed a petition in protest at the detention of the Polish-French director on Saturday in Zurich.

“We demand the immediate release of Roman Polanski,” urged the petition, which was coordinated from France by the SACD, an organisation which represents performance and visual artists.

“Film-makers in France, in Europe, in the United States and around the world are dismayed by this decision,” the petition said, adding the arrest came as “astonishing news” to the SACD.

“It seems inadmissible to them that an international cultural event, paying homage to one of the greatest contemporary film-makers, is used by police to apprehend him.”

New independent film, Black Dynamite, uses social media so effectively, one would think more money went into the social media marketing campaign than the advertising. I had already seen the Facebook ads way before I noticed any trailer clips on television. The Twitter and Facebook updates built anticipation up until the movie release- not to mention they were funny as h*ll. There is a lot that can be learned watching how Apparition and Sony Pictures are marketing this movie.

Black Dynamite not only appeals to Blaxploitation fans but loyal supporters of independent film and Black cinema. Take a look at the various social media platforms the movie uses to attract a wide variety of moviegoers:
